Someone gifted you a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, and now you’re wondering how to take care of it so that it remains lively for as long as possible ? Don’t panic, I’m going to share with you some little tips!
1. Remove the packaging : The first thing to do is obviously to remove all the packaging from your bouquet and only leave the tie that holds the stems! Remember to recycle!
2. Trim the stems : Use sharp pruning shears or scissors to trim the stems at a 45° angle. Repeat the process every 2 days to keep your flowers well hydrated!
3. Place in a vase : Fill your vase with fresh, but not cold, water up to the tie that maintains the stems together. Remove any leaves below the water level.
4. Change the water : Just as we need our daily dose of water, our lovely flowers need it too ! Changing the water in the vase at least every two days prevents the development of bacteria and rot on the stems.
5. Choose the right spot : Place your bouquet in a cool room, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Don’t place it near a fruit basket, as well, as fruits emit a gas that causes flowers to wilt faster.
6. Remove wilted flowers : Just like in life, it’s important to get rid of the negative ! Regularly remove wilted flowers from your bouquet to encourage the others to stay fresh and vibrant.
And there you go, my budding florist friends, with these simple and effective tips, your bouquet of fresh flowers should last at least 2 weeks ! So, to your vases, ready, blossom!
And if your beautiful bouquet contains some succulent plants mounted on stems, keep reading to know what to do :
1. Enjoy your bouquet: Succulents can stay without water for several days without difficulty, so first follow the same instructions than for an ordinary bouquet.
2. Remove the structure delicately: Once your bouquet has withered, retrieve the succulents and gently remove the tape, metal wires, and wooden stem to only keep the plant.
3. Place it in water: Once you have your small plant, take a glass or a small vase, fill it with water up to the edge, and cover it with cellophane. Make a small hole to pass the stem through and let the rest of the plant rest on the cellophane. If you have a propagating vase, it will be even easier, no need for cellophane! Remember to change the water from time to time!
4. Be patient: In a few days, you should see your first roots appear, when they are over 3 cm (or 1 inch), you can put your plant in a pot (not too big, preferably made of terracotta, and with a drainage hole) with special cactus soil! And there you go!
5. Or: Once the structure is removed, you can also directly put your plant in a pot with cactus mix soil, this method also works but the rate of success is a little lower! It’s up to you to decide!
